Literature has different meaning depend on the experts, but basically literature means the result of work of arts, can be spoken or written. The results of that thought are prose, poetry, narration, drama and many others. The researcher is interested in analyzing drama. Drama represents the human life which is formed of sequence dialogue played by the actors on a stage. The written form of drama is drama script. This study aims to analyze the basic character and the characterization of each character.
This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was the script of the data “A Lady of the Night” , written by Richard Nathan. In this research the writer found 5 characters indicated as protagonist and antagonist character. The data was the kinds of characters stated by Lalwani that character are classified based on the personalities and the roles.
The writer has reason why decided to analyze the drama script of “A Lady of the Night”. First reason, A Lady of the Night title itself is interesting which able to lead people thought in a different angle after read it so the writer interest to analyze the drama remembered that it tickled mind. Second one was purpose of studying the subject makes the students acquainted with the form of literature with the hope that will arouse the students‟s interest and develop their understanding.
The researcher takes Richard Nathan selected drama script “A Lady of the Night”. The scope of this study focuses on the characters that involved in this drama, they are: (1) The protagonist and antagonist characters in “A Lady of the Night”, (2) The basic characters of each character in “A Lady of the Night”, (3) How are the characterizations of the character found.
The result of this research was that there are five characters found in the drama script and had been analyzed by the researcher, those are Lamia and Herman as the protagonist character while The Three Vampire Hunters as the antagonist character. Lamia and Herman as protagonist character because they are the central of the story. Lamia‟s basic characters are sensual, to the point and never give up. While the basic characters of Herman are unstable, poor, have no confidence, innocent, greedy and pettishly. Both of Lamia and Herman showed a development even the changing did not same. Herman development was more significant than Lamia‟s. The Three Vampire Hunters as the characters who haunted Lamia existence and threatening Herman hope, The First Vampire Hunter‟s basic character are positive thinking and firm. Rational is the basic character of the Second Vampire Hunter. The Third Vampire Hunter basic character is gentle because he does not use to his work. The three of them characterization development were flat, there was no significant changing on their character in the drama.
