Literature has different meaning depend on the experts, but basically literature means the result of work of arts, can be spoken or written.The results are prose, poetry and drama. The researcher is interested in analyzing drama. Drama represents the human life by playing it on a stage. The written form of drama is drama script. This study aims to analyze the basic character and the characterization of each character. The character is divided into two kinds; round and flat character.
In this study, the researcher applied qualitative descriptive to find out, describe, and explain the characterization in written drama. To collect the data, researcher usedherself and documentation as the instrumentation.The researcher uses corpus to make easier in analyzing process and classifying the characterization of each character in the drama script. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Forster‟s theory. Forster divided character into two kinds, round and flat character. Round characters are memorable and dynamic, whereas flat characters are static and not dynamic.
The findings of this study showed the characterization of characters in the “The Hypnotists” drama script. There are six characters that had been analyzed by the researcher, those are Joe and Randi as the round character, and as the flat character are Charles, The Plumber (Bill), Brenda and Gillie. Joe and Randi as the round character because they are the central of the story. Joe has basic characters; inconsistent, caring and understanding. While Randi‟s basic characters are charming, inconsistent, seducer, artless, playgirl and spoiled. Charles as the roommate of Joe has basic characters persuader, play boy and arrogant. Liar is the basic character of the plumber because he lied about his job. The basic character of Brenda is obedient, while Gillie is professional employee.
The researcher wrote some suggestions that should be paid attention by otherswho want to learn about drama script or other literary works. The researcher suggested to the teacher to use the finding of this research as additional information in analyzing the basic character and characterization in drama script.The readers and students enlarge their knowledge about how to analyze the basic character and characterization in drama script.. The researcher also suggested the next researcher can further examine the other elements of drama and other literary works.
