Flouting Maxim Of Manner Found In Oprah Winfrey Show

People need language to make communication with each other, which is done by having a verbal conversation. Conversation needs a guidelines such as cooperative principle to make the message understood by addressees. In order to make understanding, the people should follow the Cooperative Principle. But there are still a lot of people flouted the maxim (Cooperative principle) with certain purpose. People, mostly, create an oral conversation by flouting the Grice's conversational maxims. Thus, this research was conducted to analyze the flouting of the maxim of manner found in Oprah Winfrey Show.
The purpose of this study was to find out the rules of maxim of manner which is flouted among Oprah Gail Winfrey and the guest namely Justin Beiber in a full video. Another purpose of this study was to find out the reasons of the flouting maxim of manner found in Oprah Winfrey Show. This study was based on the theory of Grice (1975), which establishes four maxims; maxim of Quality, maxim of Quantity, maxim of Relevance and maxim of Manner. but the researcher only take the last part of cooperative principle, Maxim of Manner. The approach of this study was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected through three steps; downloading the five episodes of Oprah Winfrey Show from the internet, playing the downloaded videos and then transcribing the data, deciding which utterances contain the flouting of the Maxim of Manner.
Then, the part (elements) of flouting maxim of manner and the probably reason occured trough the flouting maxim of manner in the utterances were identified. The finding of this study based on the analysis, the conversation between Oprah Gail Winfrey and Justin Beiber in Oprah Winfrey Show had several utterances that contain flouting maxim of manner. The researcher found nine utterances which flouting maxim of manner and the presentage of each rule were 0% for giving obscurity expression, 45% for giving ambiguity, 55% for giving unnecesssary prolixity, and 0% for unorderly. The most flouting the maxim of manner was done by Oprah Gail Winfrey as the host. and the reasons why the addressor flouted the maxim of manner were to make more than one interpretation and to open a new topic by giving ambiguity, decrease the monotonous conversation, to give a little joke in order to the hearer will be not bored with the talk show, to give additional informations in interesting way by prolixity in order to make the hearer would be interested to listen and watch the talk show and to make the information more clear. Most of the message in the conversation was delivered well, and the response of the addressee was positive response (understanding). And the researcher can conclude that although the addressor flouted maxim of manner, the conversation still running well(successful)
