An Analysis Of Deixis In Political Terms Found In Articles Of Jakarta Post Newspaper

This research relates to pragmatics as a branch of linguistics that studies the relationship between expression and the use of this expression in a communicative situation, particularly the relationship between sentences and context and situation in which they occur. There are many aspects of pragmatics such as speech act, presupposition, maxim, and deixis. This reseach focuses on investigating and analyzing the type of deixis used in written language, especially in the political terms found in articles of Jakarta Post newspaper. This study aimed to describe and classify how the types of deixis are used in those articles that were taken from Jakarta Post daily online newpaper.
The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research design. Qualitative research is the research that the result does not get from statistic (number). The main instrument in this study is researcher herself supported by corpuses, note, and some theories that related with the study. The data that had been collected were analyzed by researcher herself in some steps: identifying, classifying, re-checking, and summarizing. After analyzing the data, then the researcher drew the conclusion about what types of deixis used in the political articles and how they are classified.
The result of this study showed that there were several types used in the political articles of Jakarta Post newapaper. They were person deixis that used to point someone or thing (pronouns and possessive determiner), time deixis that used to point the time (now, then, and verb tense), discourse deixis that used to point the possibility of referring from one utterance backwards or forwards to other (anaphor and cataphor) and social deixis that used to point something in the social context (Sir, Lt. Gen), including proximal deictic expression (near the speaker) and distal deictic expression (away from the speaker).
Finally, the researcher suggests for the further researcher to more investigate or find out the type of deixis in other methods or sourches because it will be very useful for them to get deep understanding about pragmatics especially about deixis. Besides, there researcher hopes that this thesis can give beneficial contribution for the readers especially the students of English Education Department to know and understand more about pragmatics, especially about deixis, the English lecturers that wants to get additional material or information especially how to analyze deixis in the newspaper’s articles, and the further researchers as a source information about the way to analyze deixis in article in order to improve their study.
