An Analysis Of Word Formation Processes Found In The Best Speeches Of Barack Obama
This research relates to morphology as a branch and an essential subfield of linguistics. This research focuses on analyzing and investigating the kinds of word formation processes found in the best speeches of Barack Obama. The objectives of this research are to find out kinds of word formation processes found in the best speeches of Barack Obama and to identify the kinds of word formation which are mostly used in the best speeches of Barack Obama. This study uses descriptive qualitative method, focusing on word formation processes found in the best speeches of Barack Obama. The data sources of this research are five speech scripts of Barack Obama, while the data of this research are all words and phrases in those five speech scripts which contain kinds of word formation processes such as coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion, acronyms, derivation, affixation, and multiple processes.
The result of this research showed that kinds of word formation processes found in the best speeches of Barack Obama are borrowing, compounding, clipping, backformation, conversion, acronyms, derivation, affixation and multiple processes. In this study, affixation has the highest frequency of appearance that is 497 words and has the highest percentage that is 59. 52%. Then, for the second is placed by derivation which has the frequency of appearance about 140 words (16.77%). Meanwhile, for the borrowing and multiple processes have the same frequency (74 words) and the same percentage (8.86%). The frequency of compounding process is about 27 words and the percentage is about 3.23%. Next, the frequency of backformation here is about 12 words (1.44%), while the frequency of acronym is about 7 words (0.84%). In addition, the least of appearance in Obama‟s speeches are placed by clipping and conversion. Both of these processes have the same frequency of appearance (only 2 words) and of course the same percentage (0.24%).
Finally, the researcher concludes that there are nine kinds of word formation processes found in the best speeches of Barack Obama, namely: borrowing, compounding, clipping, backformation, conversion, acronyms, derivation, affixation and multiple processes. Then, the kind of word formation process that is mostly used is affixation. Meanwhile, the least of appearance in Obama‟s speeches are placed by clipping and conversion. In addition, because of this study is far for being perfect and has a lot of weakness, the researcher hopes that the next researchers will elaborate this study completely and perfectly.
