Politeness Strategies Found In The Movie Of Ramona And Beezus

It cannot be denied that people interact with each other by using language. Through language people share information, ideas, or feelings with another. In sharing the information, ideas or feelings in the dialogue interaction can be firmed that there are some politeness strategies that are found in that dialogue. This study is intended to analyze the kinds of politeness strategies that can be found in the movie entitled “Ramona and Beezus”. There is a problem that is discussed in this study; (1) what kinds of politeness strategies found in the dialogues of “Ramona and Beezus”movie? The dialogues analyzed only those between the main characters that are Ramona and Beezus.
Politeness strategies are used to formulate messages in order to save the hearer’s face when face-threatening acts are inevitable or desired. Brown and Levinson (1987:91) explains that politeness isbelieved to be universal phenomenon, but its realization varies according to the culture. Brown and Levinson outline four main types of politeness strategies: bald on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record (indirect).“Ramona and Beezus” movie is the source of the data used in this study.
The researcher applied qualitative research in this study since all data are in the form of words. While the type of the research is content analysis since it intended to analyze the content of the data which are in the form of movie script to find the politeness strategies. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theory of Brown and Levinson about politeness strategies that consist of bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off-record (indirect). Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that there are one hundred one utterances that use four strategies of politeness. They are bald on record with seventeen utterances, positive politeness with fifty three utterances, negative politeness with twelve utterances, and the last is off-record (indirect) with nineteen utterances. The most frequently used politeness is positive politeness then followed by off-record (indirect) and then there is bald on record and the less frequently used is negative politeness.
For supporting this study, the researcher needed source of theories related to Politeness strategies such as: Bald on record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record (Indirect). From the findings, it is expected that this study result will be useful for English Learners by knowing the information from Politeness Strategies found in the movie of “Ramona and Beezus”.
