Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension On Narrative Text By Using Shared Reading Strategy At Tenth Grade Of SMK NU Bululawang
Reading should become the main emphasis in English teaching program in Indonesia, particulary for Senior High School students, so many problem found in teaching reading process. Therefore, the teacher should find out the solution to solve the problem on the premilinary study. The researcher found that the tenth grade of SMK NU Bululawang had difficulty achieving the optimum instructional objective of reading. They still had difficulty in finding the information in the text reading and limited vocabulary. This condition influenced their score. The school basis of minimum mastery learning standard for English was 70, whereas the student score of reading comprehension students not reached the standard.
Based on the problems stated above the researcher implemented shared reading strategy to improve the students reading comprehension. Shared reading strategy was one of some strategies. Therefore, the researcher was interested in presenting shared reading strategy at tenth grade of SMK NU Bululawang, as bases of this study. The use of shared reading strategy in teaching English was to improve English reading in the administration class of tenth grades of SMK NU Bululawang because they got difficulties in understanding the text. The objective of the study was to describe how shared reading strategy able to improve the students’ reading comprehension on narrative text at tenth grade of SMK NU Bululawang.
The research design employed for this research was classroom action research (CAR). This study used collaborative classroom action research, in which the classroom English teacher and her collaborator acted as the observer during the teaching and learning process. The subject of this study was the one of the tenth grade of SMK NU Bululawang that consisted of 35 students. The procedure of the research consisted of four main step: plan, action, observe, and reflection. The quantitative data was obtained from the test; the qualitative data were obtained from observation checklist of the teaching and learning process and the research questionnaire. In this research the researcher was conducted one cycle.
The finding of the researcher showed that the use of Shared Reading Strategy improved the students reading comprehension. It could be seen from the students’ score in the preliminary test only 9 students reached the minimum standard score of school, while in the post test their achievement improved and each students got a score above 70, all of the students reached the standard of the school.
Based on the result of the study, English teacher need to implement this shared reading strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability. In addition, further researchers are suggested to use the Shared Reading Strategy for different grades and text type to see the strategy whetherit can be implemented effectively in solving the students’ problem in comprehending the reading tex
