Writing is a communicative act; it is a way of sharing information, thoughts, experiences, or ideas, among people. Writing is one of the language skills that should be thaught besides the other skills. Based on the curriculum recommended by the government, there are some texts which have to be mastered by the students at junior high school. One of the texts is narrative text. Narrative text is the text designed to amuse, entertain, and deal with actual or vicarious experience in different way. in this study, researcher tried to apply picture series as a technique. Picture in writing is one way to solve the problems in writing. (Wright, 1997:2) states “pictures make particularly powerful contribution to both the content and the process of language learning”.
This study was aimed to find out how Picture series can improve the students’ writing ability in narrative text at SMP Kartika IV-9 MALANG. The subject in this study is students of VIIIA SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang which consisted of 44 students. The instrument that used in this research was interview, observation checklist, documentation and writing narrative test. All the data were analyzed, and the result of the analysis was compared with the criteria of success that had been decided by the researcher in this study to know whether the students’ achieve the criteria of success or not. In this study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research as the methodology of this research. In this study, the researcher acted as teacher and the English teacher of SMP English teacher acted as the observer.The study was carried out in two cycles containing four steps (planning, implementing, observing, reflecting). Each cycle consisted of four meetings, first meeting focused on explanation, second and third meetings focused on treatment and the fourth was writing test
The result of the test showed that picture series could improve the students’ ability in writing narrative text at the second grade students of SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang. It was proven from the criteria of success that were reached. This study was conducted in two cycles, cycle 1 and cycle II. In cycle I the students got score more than 75 were 28 students (64% from 44 students who passed the minimum score). In cycle II the students’ score improve than the previous score there were 40 students or 91% students whose got score more than 75 success in writing class, and 4 students or 9% students who were still failed.
Finally teaching and learning writing is advisable to the teachers to use the picture series in teaching because it makes the students motivated in learning English especially in writing skill. And for the next researcher should learn the weaknesses of this research and apply this method more perfectly than this study.
