Improving Students Reading Comprehension On Descriptive text By Using TTW ( Think, Talk, And Write ) Strategy For The Seventh Grade Students At SMP Negeri 1 Kepanjent
English is one of the most important subjects in Indonesia. It means English is a language that is used by all of people in the world for communicating with the other people, because English is an International language. Teaching and learning English activities in Junior High School are always oriented to the mastery of the four skills. The skills include listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The important subject at Junior High Schools is reading comprehension subject because it is an important skill that is needed for areas of school. Reading becomes essential for everyone to increase his or her knowledge.
The design of this study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study focuses on the students in a particular classroom VII A at SMP Negeri 1 Kepanjen. It aims
at solving the students’ problem in reading comprehension especially to comprehend descriptive text. The researcher implements Think, Talk, and Write strategy in teaching reading. The instruments that the researcher used in this study were as follows: interview, observation checklist, reading test, questionnaire, and documentation.
The research findings presented the action research stage of two cycles. This section describes the action research stage which consists of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The cycle one was implemented with those phases and it was done 3 meetings, such as meeting 1, meeting 2, and meeting 3 (reading test). After the cycle one had been done, the researcher should conduct cycle two with 3 meetings. They were meeting 1, meeting 2, and meeting 3 (reading test). In preliminary study there were only 41,9% of total students who got score more than 75. While, in Cycle 1 the students who achieved the criteria of success was 54,8% of 31 students. Next, in the Cycle 2 the students who achieved the criteria of success was 93,5% of 31 students. So more than 75% students achieved in reading comprehension. So, the implementation of Think Talk and Write in cycle 2 in successful. The result of questionnaire, 26 students out of 31 students (83,8%) interested by using Think Talk and Write strategy for reading. While, 28 students out of 31 students (90,3%) almost all of students more active and make motivation learning about reading.
Think Talk and Write strategy gave a good impact to the students and this strategy also helped the teacher in teaching English especially in Reading easily. It could make the students more active in English class. Beside many good impact that were explained above, this strategy also made the students’ score better than the students’ score before using the strategy. Therefore, the researcher concluded that this research was done successfully.
