An Analysis Of Deixisin The Advertisements Of The Jakarta Post Newspaper
Deixis is a part of pragmatic that has connection with certain word or sentence that changes because of the context. In our daily life, we can find deixis easily such as in advertisement. In advertisement, sometimes we get difficulties in understanding or interpreting the messages of the advertisement. In this research the researcher chooses the theory of deixis because deixis is used to point thing in order to make clear what the writer means. This view motivates the researcher to choose the writing form of advertisement in print media, The Jakarta Post to be describes because the researcher assumes that there are kinds of deixis which can be analyzed and there are some words considering difficult to be understood because it is an Indonesian newspaper but used English as the language and most of the readers are Indonesian. The purposes of this research are to describe the interpretation of each advertisement of The Jakarta Post newspaper, to describe kinds of deixis which used in the advertisements, to describe the interpretation of the deixis in each advertisement, and to describe kinds of deixis which used frequently on February and March editions.
It is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the data of this research are in the words form. The steps of data collection were reading and understanding theory related to the English Literature. Then, chose and collected the data related to the problem that will be investigated. At last, the researcher read the advertisements of The Jakarta Post newspaper, found the data, put sign, and made checklist on it. To analyze the data, the researcher identified the data from data’s collection, classified the data, analyzed the data, summarized the finding of the data, re-checked the finding, and made conclusion.
Based on finding and discussion of the data, it can be concluded that there were three kinds of deixis namely person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis, and deixis was used frequently on February and March editions is person deixis. The researcher interpreted the advertisements and deixis after she read the advertisements and also gave additional information about the advertisements. In this research, the researcher mentioned some suggestions such as for further researchers who take the similar field, they are expected to find deixis more deeply and use different theory or different data source. Then, for the students, from Kanjuruhan University especially, the researcher expects it can help them to enlarge their knowledge. The last, for the teachers or lecturers, the researcher wishes it may give deeper understanding about deixis and in order that their students can easily comprehend the deixis theory, the researcher also suggest that they should take examples from available researches.
