Improving Reading Comprehension Skill Using Story Mapping At The Second Grade Students Of SMP Negeri 1 Lawang
Reading is one of the most important aspects in English teaching, makes the researcher takes the special priority in teaching and learning process. The researcher needs some special technique that can motivate and help students to become independent learner. Story mapping implemented in cooperative learning is applied as one of technique to improve students’ reading skill.
Story mapping is a technique used after a story has been read which can be used to train students to recognize the basic framework of narrative stories. It is to help students using cooperative learning to comprehend a text materials. The problem of this study was “How can the use of story mapping improve students’ reading skill at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Lawang?”
This study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher was successful in two cycles, so the next cycle was not done. The subject of the study included second grade students of class I at SMP Negeri 1 Lawang. There were 28 students that join the test in the last meeting. The research instruments consisted of observation checklist for teacher and students’ activity, field note and reading test. The result in the first cycle, the students previous score from the teacher showed that 21 of 28 students acquired score below 75. The final purpose was that all of the students must get score above or equal criteria of success. And the result of reading test in the first cycle had not fulfilled the criterion of success because some students still got score under 75. In the second cycle, the researcher was successful, this was showed from the number of the students who got score above the criteria of success were 24 of 28 students acquired score above 75. 4 students of 28 students acquired score equal or above 75. The last, the researcher did not find any of the students got score under criteria of success 75. It meant that all of the students were successful in increasing their reading comprehension skill.
Based on the result above, the researcher suggests that in order to get better result of teaching English subject, especially in increasing students’ reading skill, one of the ways is using story mapping. The successful teaching using story mapping here depends on the management applied by researcher such as how to manage the classroom activities, material used, time effectiveness, and the students’ skill.
