Improving Student’s Reading Comprehension Using Herringbone Technique At Second Grade Of SMP An-Nur Bululawang
This study was conducted in the basis of preliminary study in SMP AnNur Bululawang. The researcher found that the students underestimated reading, the lack of vocabulary and reading practice, the students did not show enthusiasm and interest, and had low ability in understanding the text. The reading comprehension means scores in the pre-test were below the standard which was 63. To overcome the students difficulty in reading comprehension. The researcher implemented Herringbone technique.
This study used of classroom action research design because it aimed at improving the existing condition in educational practice. In carry out this study, the researcher acted as the English teacher of SMP An-Nur Bululawang in the academic year 2013/2014. The procedures in doing the research are; preliminary study, planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The data were collected through three research instruments: observation checklist, questionnaire and reading comprehension tests. All the data analyzed and the result of the analysis was compared with the criteria of success defined in this study to see whether they were achieved or not.
The findings showed that the Herringbone Technique improved the students achievement in reading comprehension. It was provided that the score reach the criteria of success. This study was conducted in one cycles. The average score of the students was 80.27. It means that the researcher was successful in conducting this research, so the research was stopped. Thus, it can be concluded that the student reading comprehension improved. It was also found that having an observer during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension using Herringbone technique was very benecifial and helpful, since the researcher had to focus on implementing the technique. Another is that the implementation of Herringbone technique in teaching and learning of reading comprehension needed more time and energy since it has many step to do. The researcher suggested to other researcher to conduct a similar study at different level with different types of text under similar problems to see whether Herringbone technique is applicable and effective to improve the students reading comprehension achievement.
Finally, the researcher concluded that Herringbone technique could improve the students English reading comprehension. Besides, this method can help and make the students interested in reading and it can motivate the students to read.
