Improving Listening Ability By Using Dictogloss For The First Grade Students At SMPN 1 WAGIR
Listening is important to build communication skill. As the receptive skill, listening involves students’ comprehension and their background knowledge about what they will hear. Students who have background knowledge will be easy to understand the information they want to hear. Besides, they can retell the information that they have heard. To make the students have good listening ability and get good score in listening test, the students need an appropriate strategy that can improve their ability. So the researcher applies dictogloss strategy.
This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) because the researcher wanted to overcome the students’ problem in listening. The subjects of this research were the students at second year of 2014/2015 and the researcher chose VII-H class because most students in this class had low achievement in listening. In this research used two cycles, every cycle consisted of four steps, they were: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The researcher used observation checklist, test, questionnaire, and documentation as instrument of this research.
The researcher conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) with four meeting in every cycle. Three meeting for implementing the strategy and one meeting for test. The result of test in cycle one failed. 14 of 32 students failed with percentage 56.25%. When implementation the strategy 14 students who failed were not optimally follow the learning activity. They were also not active when discussion. After implementation the strategy in cycle two, the result of test said that 26 of 31 students was success with percentage 83.8%. It was upper standard of success and the result of observation checklist in cycle two achieved progress from meeting to meeting. Moreover they were so enthusiast when implantation of the strategy was run.
Thus, the researcher obtained that dictogloss strategy was very beneficial to improve the students’ listening ability. Dictogloss strategy helps the students to hear and understand long text. It is recommended for the English teachers to use dictogloss strategy in their teaching listening
