An Analisys Of Syntactic Structure Of Modification In Jane Austen S Emma
In communication, people use lnguage as media. In linguistics, the study about the sentence of language is syntax. People use language to write, speak, and analyze, for example, the Jane Austen’s Emma. The problem is people find the difficulties in understanding some people find the difficulties in understanding some syntactic structure of modification in a novel. In order to have deep to understanding in syntax, the research chooses the material from Jane Austen’s Emma. The research formulated the problems of the study are: How is the syntactic structure of modifacation written by using in Janes Austen’s novel.
To answer the above problem, the researcher used some theories which are suitable with the subject. The tree diagram theory proposed by Noam Chomsky is used to analyze phrase. Chomsky states that a tree diagrams show hierarchical structure of sentences. The sentences are considered the basis of the syntactic system. Tree diagram shows which words are constituents of a phrase that the element is called modifier.
This thesis employs descriptive qualitative method. The steps is collecting and analysis the data are finding Jane Austen’s novels, choosing Jane Austen’s novel as the data, reading the the novels to understand the whole content of the phrase, classifying the phrases transcribing the phrase have been selected and count the number syntactic structure of modification and the example and find out the difficulties of the comprehending of the meaning the example of modification. The researcher hope the people can understanding how the syntactic structureof modification used in a novel.
The findings of the study reveal that, the researcher finds that the most common used is personal reference. Data collection and data analysis, the kind of phrase that is mostly found in this study is noun phrase. The researcher found 20 verb phrases, 26 noun phrases, 5 adjective phrases and 3 prepositional phrase. The uniqueness of phrases found in this novel is that they modified by various kind of modifier.
From those findings it is expected that the result of study is useful for English learners. By knowing the information syntactic structure of modification in Jane Austen’s Emma.
