Code Mixing Used In Ketika Cinta Bertasbih Novel Written By Habiburrahman El Shirazhy
The main function of language as a communication tool makes the language itself cannot be separated by human being. The communication is used to communicate with others whether in the same culture or different culture. As people know that Indonesia has many variety of languages. Sometimes, language is used to communicate with others in different culture. People often mix two or more languages with a certain reason to make the hearer or interlocutor understand easily.
That phenomenon is called code mixing. The phenomenon of code mixing seldom occurs in daily conversation or in speaking activity, but actually the phenomenon of code mixing also occurs in other aspects, like in novel, magazine, or etc. In this research, the researcher chooses “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih” novel written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy as a object of her research because in that novel there are many code mixing phenomenons occured both in the dialogues between the characters, especially in character’s utterance and also in the plot description. In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method, the data were the types and the reasons of using code mixing. The researcher collected the data by reading the novel and finding the code mixing phenomenons, then put them into corpuses. The data were analyzed by using Hoffman and Saville-Troike’s theories about the types and the reasons of using code mixing.
Based on the findings, there were found 247 code mixing phenomenons that occured in “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih” novel especially found in both dialogues between the characters, especially in character’s utterance and also in the plot description. From the total of 247 code mixing phenomenons that occured in this novel, the most type that occured in this novel was intra-sentential code mixing, there were 170 or in percentages 68,8%. On the other side, the lowest type that occured in this novel was intra-lexical code mixing, there were 24 or in percentages 9,7% from the total 247 code mixing phenomenons occured in this novel. Meanwhile, besides the types that occured, the reasons of using code mixing from the total 247, the most reason of using code mixing was “because of lexical need”, there were 96 or in percentages 38,9%. In contrast, the lowest reason of using code mixing was “interjection”. There were 2 or in percentages 0,8%. Besides, one reason that did not occur in this novel was “repetition of using clarification”. In conclusion, the code mixing phenomenon was actually not only found in daily conversation but also in written text. By learning code mixing, whether the
researcher, the readers, or the next researchers were able to know widely about code mixing, especially about the types and the reasons of using code mixing
