Taxonomy Of Speech Act Analysis In Twilight Trio Oprah Winfrey Show

Language is an important thing in communication. Through language people can share anything they want, feel, even they thought. In communication, people deliver their information by using sentence or utterance. Sentences and utterances that they utter sometimes have many meanings. From that point we can understand that every single sentence or utterance that the speaker utters has its own act, it is known as speech act. The implementation of speech act in real communication in real communication is sometimes hiding in lingual form and often makes misunderstanding in its own interpretation. The example of interesting field of speech act is TV show. The reason is because TV show is one media that has conversation that the same as communication in real context. Therefore, this study only focused on the taxonomy of speech act and its function in TV show.
This study aimed at investigating types of taxonomy of speech act. It intended to find out the types of taxonomy of speech at that are declarative, representative, expressive, directive, and commisive and the types of function of speech act that are competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive of conversation on the TV show. The research was done into “Twilight Trio” Oprah TV show. The data documentation was obtained from conversation the entire guest stars and Oprah as the host of the TV show. Then, the data was analyzed descriptively by the researcher by making some steps there were (1) identifying the speech act, (2) interpret the speech act, (3) classifying the speech act.
The results of the study were as the following. First, there were 148 utterances that indicate taxonomy of speech act. It was consist of 68 utterances of representative, 32 utterances of expressive, 21 utterances of comissive, 9 utterances of declarative and 4 utterances of directive. Second, the function of the speech act were 102 utterances for collaborative, 22 utterances for competitive, 20 utterances for convivial and 1 utterance for conflictive. At last, this research could have benefit to the reader as information about implementation of speech act in the real situation and also as fresh example of studying speech act by using interesting media such as TV show. Then for the other researcher, it can be used as information in types of taxonomy of speech act based on Searle theory
