English is a foreign language for us. Because of it, when we learn it we will get difficulties. Thus, teacher should have an interesting method and media for teaching English in order to make students easier to understand it. Dealing with learning English, it will be better if the students learn vocabulary first. Without mastering vocabulary they will find some difficulties in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Based on the situation, the researcher used flashcards as the media to make the students easier in learning vocabulary.
The research was conducted at the first grade students of SMPN 1 Trawas. The objective of the study was to know the effectiveness of flashcards on students’ vocabulary mastery. The research design used by the researcher was experimental research. The sample were two groups, those were experimental and control group. The instruments which were used in this research were test, observation, documentation, and interview. T-test formula was used to analyze the data.
Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical calculation showed that the means score of experimental group was higher than control group (91.29>80.16) and the result of Z-test was 3.67, while the Z-table in the normal curve with the significant level (α) 5% is 1.65. It means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) accepted. So, the students who were taught by using flashcard could improve their vocabulary mastery better than those who were not taught by using flashcard. In conclusion, the result of the study showed that flashcards were effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It was proved by the result of the test. So, the researcher suggests the English teacher and further researcher to use flashcards as the media for teaching English, because it makes students more active and easier to learn English especially vocabulary.
