A Study of Slang Language In Bruno Mars Song Lyrics
Slang is a specific word, phrase, or utterance, which is commonly used by young people in their community. It refers to unconventional words, so it is not appropriate to be spoken in a formal situation, such as in the school, university, or in the office. Slang consists of words and expressions which will not be found in the dictionary. This study is going to analyze the use of slang in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics. In this research, the researcher formulates three research problems, those are: (1) what are the slang words used in Bruno Mars’s song lyrics. (2)What are the meanings of the slang words used in Bruno Mars’s song lyrics and (3) what are the characteristics of slang used in Bruno Mars’s song lyrics.
In analyzing the data the researcher used some theories which are appropriate with the subject. The theory of slang language proposed by Anderson and Trudgill (1983) used to analyze the slang words and meaning, and in analyzing the characteristics used theory by (Kawira, 1990:10). The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative research method because the researcher wants to describe the slang used in Bruno Mars’s song lyrics.
Having analyzed the data, the researcher found out the slang words and the meaning of slang according to Anderson and Trudgill (1983) theory. The researcher also found out the characteristics of slang based on (Kawira, 1990:10 theories, they are: clipping characteristics, arbitrary, flippant, acronym, and creative. There are two kinds of slang characteristics that always find on each speech, there are clipping characteristics and creative characteristics.
Finally, the researcher suggests that the future researchers to conduct the other object, like movies script and discuss it more deeply. And in order can give a positive contribution on the development of English learning especially in English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Kanjuruhan University of Malang
