Errors Analysis of Tenses In Writing Sentences Made By Eighth Year Students of SMPK Widyatama Batu
The ability of using English in globalization era is very vital considering that English is the international communication language. Thus, everyone in Indonesia should master English and improve the English education for themselves. Tense is one of the elements of part of speech that has a relation with the structure in making sentences. Many students make many errors in writing, especially in applying tenses. Common errors in constructing sentence grammatically and the difficulty is on verb form. Therefore, the writer was interested to conduct a research about Error Analysis of Tenses in Writing Sentences that Made by Eighth Year Students of SMPK Widyatama of Batu.
The state of problems are: (1) What is the dominant tense error made by the students of the eighth year of SMPK Widyatama of Batu in writing sentences?, (2) What are the sources of the students’ error?, (3) What should teacher do to avoid the students’ error?
Research design of this research was qualitative research, while the population and sample was the students of eighth grade of SMPK Widyatama- Batu consisted of forty three students. The instrumentation of this study is the researcher herself . The procedures of data collection in this study using a technique, namely participant observation. The technique in collecting data was by giving test of writing and questionnaire to the students, also students’ daily writing product. The result of the students’ work was needed to be analyzed the various tense errors.
The result of the analysis shows that: (1) Dominant tense error made by the students of the eighth year of SMPK Widyatama- Batu in writing sentences was Simple Past Tense. The error of simple present tense happened in one hundred and fifty five items (72% from total item), and one hundred and eighty eight item of simple past tense error (87% from total item), while simple future tense error was one hundred and seventeen item (54% from total item). (2) The sources of students’ error were interference of the native language, an incomplete knowledge of the target language, and the Complexity of English in applying tenses. (3) Teacher should do proper teaching of tenses in order to reduce the error.
Finally, this study hopefully contributes both for teacher and students. Teachers are expected to give proper teaching of tenses, it should be done within the exercises continuously. By doing so, it is hoped to reduce the students’ errors. In the other hand, students should memorize the tenses that have been learnt by writing simple sentences. Besides, students are suggested to pay more attention to their study of English to improve their mastery of tense. Another one is wareness to the errors and avoid repeating the same errors in their further learning.
