Improving Students Speaking Skilll Proficiency By Using Small Group Discussion of First Grade of SMK Pacet

This study is aimed to improving students’ speaking proficiency by using small group discussion of first grade of SMK Pacet. Small group discussion is chosen to practice the communication. The statement of problem is how can small group discussion improve students speaking profociency af first grade of SMK Pacet.
The research design this thesis is Clasroom Action Research (CAR). This research describe the real condition and situation where the researcher did the research. The purposes of the study is to improve small group discussion can improve students’ speaking proficiency. The research is conducted cycle process starting from the planning, implementing, observation, and reflecting and it is implemented in two cycles. The analysis of data uses qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data are obtained from the teaching and learning process.
The quantitative data are obtained through test, obsevation cheklist and questionnaire. The finding of this study indicated that learning activities can be done in small group discussion are discussion, role play, picture discribe, story telling. The speaking aspect that has improved are pronunciation, fluency and grammatical patterns were the real evidence of the improvement of the students speaking ability. It is also revealed that students achievement of the second test was full fill the criteria of success with mean score 72 is better than mean score of the first step 65. The problem rose are the speaking lesson turn out to be noise and the students chatted with their friends.
In conclusion, small group discussion has improves the students speaking proficiency because the students are able to speak fluently and the students have confident to speak English well and the students can express their idea enjoyable. Due to these result, it is suggested to teacher must give opportunity, motivation and support to the students to speak up and be acitve in the class.
