An Analysis Of Figurative Languages In Album 19 Of Adele’s Song Lyrics
This research is related to literature field. Literature has several types such as poem, drama, short story and song lyrics. In literature usually has some figurative langauges.Figurative language is a word or phrase that departs from everyday literal language for the sake of comparison, emphasis, clarity, or freshness. This research provides the analysis of figurative languages used in song lyrics. Why in songs? Because everyone loves to listen song. A song may have some of figurative languages. So the researcher is interested in analyzing songs, especially Adele’s songs. Moreover the lyric of Adele’s song partly used figurative language. Therefore not everyone can understand it.So the researcher wanted to analyze songs by Adele. This research is to know the real meaning and what kind of figurative languages used in Adele’s songs.
The research design used in this research was a descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research focuses on deep analyzing towards interaction of each concept empirically in which the data is explained in the form of word or sentences not numbers. The main instrument in this research was the researcher herself additional intstrument were documentation and corpuses. Documentation deals with the literature concerning with the theories of analyzing meaning found in some books, web browsing, printed materials, thesis, dictionary and song lyrics. Corpuses is used for analyzing and making note to classify the kind of figurative languages and the meaning.
In this study the researcher explained the meaning of figurative languages used in Adele songs. From the counting by the researcher, these were the percentage of figurative language which used in Adele’s songs from the high to the low were hyperbole 23 (37%), metonymy 19 (31%), personification 6 (9%), simile 4 (6%), antithesis 4 (6%), symbolism 1 (1%), metaphor 1 (1%), oxymoron 1 (1%), euphemism 1 (1%), irony 1 (1%). So from the analysis of this study, figurative languageswhich were common used in Adele’s song lyrics was hyperbole because from the researcher counting hyperbole obtain 37% and in number there were 23 hyperbole in album 19 of Adele’s song lyrics.
Finally, the researcher wanted to give the suggestions to the next researchers to develop this research and make a new research about figurative languages in other song lyrics and in other kinds of literature such as in poem, short story, even drama. All in all, the researcher hopes this thesis can give a beneficial contribution to the reader
