The Structure of Modification Used In English Running Texts On Metro TV

In communication, people use language as the media. In linguistics, the study about the sentence of languages is syntax. People also use language to write, speak, and analyze, for example, the running texts. The problem is we find out and describe the patterns of structures of modification used in English running texts on Metro TV. In order to have deep understanding in syntax, the researcher chooses the material from Metro TV running texts chooses the complete phrase.
The researcher formulated the problems of the study are: What patterns of structure of modification used in English running texts on Metro TV? To answer the problem above, the researcher used some theories which were suitable with the subject. The Chinese box theory proposed by Nelson Francis was used to analyze pattern of structure of modification. Francis stated that structure of modification meant the syntactic structure rule where the structures had two components of immediate constituents, a head and a modifier. This thesis employed descriptive qualitative method. The step in collecting the data were from Metro TV’s news and talk show program namely Metro “Indonesia Now” from March 04th until March 29th, 2013, copying the data in the form of audio visual to the computer and watching the television, writing down the sentences broadcasted by Metro TV, giving code from the data result the researcher was active as a data collector.
After analyzing the data, the researcher finally found twenty patterns of structure of modification. As classified only into one classification according to the head of structure of modification, it was noun as head that appeared very frequently as heads of structures of modification in Metro TV running text. Almost data in Metro TV running text applied the structure of modification. Noun determiners also be classify as modifiers, so that the function word may also perform this task.
Based on the finding, there were many problems, which had not been analyzed. The researcher suggests the future researcher can continue this research
with different subject and style by used a different theory.
