Analysis of Plot In Oedipus The King Drama By Sophocles

Literature is the mirror of life and all the subjects related to human life are the subject matter or element of literature. Literature is expressing some special aspects of human experience in words. Tursini (2009:17), states that, “literature is the art of written works. Literature represents a language or a people: culture and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or cultural artifact. Literature introduces us to new worlds of experience”. The pleasure of literature is someone can play with his own imagination.
Based on this study, the researcher presented an example that was taken from Sophocles’ Drama entitled Oedipus the King drama. Plot was the principal of this thesis. In this analysis the researcher used descriptive qualitative and library research to describe the structure of plot and the kind of plot in Oedipus
the king drama. In this play there were five main characters they were Oedipus, Jocasta, Creon, Teiresias and Chorus. The story told about Oedipus who was a
king in Thebes. The city was plague stricken by some disease. The Apollo said that it was because of the murdered of Lauis. Then Creon asked Oedipus to call
Teiresias. Teiresias said that the murder of Lauis was Oedipus. When the conflict happened, came a Messenger he told that Oedipus was the baby of Lauis. In this event finally Oedipus knew that he did his fate. He murdered his father and married his mother. Finally Jocasta was killed herself, Oedipus was blind and he
was thrown away from Thebes. The researcher described the structure of plot in this drama by analyzing these elements, namely exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and dénouement. And in this play the author used unified plot and used straightforward technique to describe the story for which structurally based on the theory given in chapter II.
At the last chapter, the researcher pointed to the conclusion of the analysis. The structure of plot was well arranged by the author. The way author described the conflict was also interesting. Therefore the researcher realized the weakness and nobody was perfect. The researcher hoped that the future students should be willing enough o give more support to make an analysis on the other field literature.
