The Effectiveness Of Peer Review Technique On Students’ Writing Ability At MTs. Al-Hidayah Bululawang
Writing is one of the important skill topics taught to junior high school students. They may have problems in studying writing because English is not their mother tongue and it has different rule with Indonesian writing. They cannot write well because they have limited knowledge in English grammar and vocabulary.
Therefore, the teacher should have alternative ways in teaching writing. One of way to improve student’s writing ability is peer review in which the students are
involved in the process of correcting their works. When students review the writing of their peers, they share their ideas, create an atmosphere of cooperation, develop independence and responsibility, identify strengths and weaknesses in their writing and reinforce editing skills.
The objective of this research was to find out whether there is any significant difference between students who were taught by using peer review technique on students writing ability at MTs. Al-Hidayah Bululawang. The design of this research was experimental research. The researcher used two groups; experimental group and control group. She used A class as experimental group, and B class as control group. The number of each group was 25 students. The population of the research was students of MTs. Al-Hidayah Bululawang. In taking the sample of the research, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, the researcher makes some steps: (1) doing observation; (2) conducting pre test; (3) giving treatment to experimental group and conventional method to control group; (4) giving post- test; and (5) analyzing data. To analyze the data, the researcher applied descriptive and inferential statistic using independent samples T-test by SPSS 16 by windows. In the data of pre-test both of groups, the mean of students score pre-test for both groups, experimental group 63.80 and control group 70.60 .the result of analysis by using Independent t-test sig (2-tailed) was 0.00. It can be concluded that control group had better writing ability than experimental group before the treatment was given to experimental group. Whereas, the result of post test showed that score of experimental group was better than control group. Mean score of post test of the experimental group score was 83.80. Meanwhile, the mean score of control group was 76.80.the result of analysis by using Independent t-test, sig (2-tailed) was 0.00. In which, it was less than 0.05 ( 0.00< 0.05). Based on the result above, it meant that peer review technique was an effective technique on students writing ability. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the English teachers can apply peer review technique as technique in teaching writing. She also suggests students to apply peer review in writing, and hopes this research findings can be utilized as reference for other researcher.
