A Content Analysis Of English Module Book “Smart Steps” For Second Grade Of Junior High School At SMPN 1 Gondanglegi
Nowadays, education has been hot topic to be discussed because the government keeps on developing the curriculum to seek better strategies for the development of education in Indonesia. One of the curricula is the 2006 English curriculum which is known as KTSP. One of the objectives of the 2006 English curriculum is to expect the students to have communicative competence in using English for communication by mastering four skills namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
This study attempts to find the answer of the relevance of the module book entitled Smart Steps to the 2006 English curriculum in terms of the elements of
language, language skills, themes presented, and the relevance of Smart Steps to the components of good instructional module stated by Heinich at al.
The sources of the data of this study were the materials in Smart Steps for second grade of SMPN 1 Gondanglegi and the components of the module. Since
this study concerned with the content analysis of the materials and the components of the module, the descriptive qualitative study is employed because
there was no statistical calculation.
The finding of this study shows that the materials presented in Smart Steps are relevant with the stated in 2006 English curriculum although there are some
materials that should be presented in semester 2 but presented in semester 1. This module also meets the requirements of good instructional module stated by
Heinich at al. besides, this module mostly meet the principles of good instructional materials.
From the description above, it can be summed up that English module entitled Smart Steps can be categorized as an appropriate English module but still
has weakness. It means that this module needs to be revised. There are some considerable points can be used to revise Smart Steps are: 1. In presenting the materials, the writer should firstly make formulation of the material based and structured as on the curriculum 2. Fun activity, such as role play should be provided in this module in order to motivate the students in learning English and to help them improving their language skills, especially speaking.
